Recommended for leisure pursuit as well as young readers studying ethnic folklore, these are fun and lively tales.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (Illustrated Stories for Children) by Washington Irving, Arthur Rackham (Illustrator)

Many folk-art paintings illustrate this simplified retelling of Washington Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Varied in size from small vignettes to double-page spreads, the colorful paintings are reminiscent of the works of Moses' great-grandmother, better known as Grandma Moses. A large-format picture book that will fill a need in some libraries. Carolyn Phelan

Grimm's Fairy Tales by Wilhelm Grimm (Editor), Brothers Grimm (Editor), Arthur Rackham (Illustrator), Peter Glassman (Afterword)

From Publishers Weekly: Old-fashioned, often broken typeface and Arthur Rackham's gloriously reproduced original artwork accompany 22 stories in a new edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales, originally published in 1909. A sepia-toned illustration for "Red Riding Hood" shows the cloaked girl meeting the bristly wolf, dwarfed by endlessly tall, bare trees. A caption in "The Bremen Town Musicians" recalls the bygone era: "They came upon a Cat, sitting in the road, with a face as long as a wet week."  Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

A Christmas Carol (Everymans Library Childrens Classics) by Charles Dickens, Arthur Rackham (Illustrator)

From the bustling snowy streets of 19th century London to the ghastly apparition of Scrooge's Christmas future, the illustrations by Sir Arthur Rackham render visually the full emotional impact of Charles Dickens' classic Christmas tale. Sir Arthur Rackham brings to life the original, unabridged text of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol as no artist has before. With breathtaking clarity and fascinating historic detail, he transports the reader to the world of Bob Cratchit and his cruel boss, Ebenezer Scrooge. Each character in the London crowds comes alive through Rackham's use of distinct features and special expressions.

The Wind in the Willows (Everyman's Library Children's Classics) by Kenneth Grahame, Arthur Rackham (Illustrator)

"[Mole] thought his happiness was complete when, as he meandered aimlessly along, suddenly he stood by the edge of a full-fed river. Never in his life had he seen a river before--this sleek, sinuous, full-bodied animal, chasing and chuckling, gripping things with a gurgle and leaving them with a laugh, to fling itself on fresh playmates that shook themselves free, and were caught and held again." Such is the cautious, agreeable Mole's first introduction to the river and the Life Adventurous. Emerging from his home at Mole End one spring, his whole world changes when he hooks up with the good-natured, boat-loving Water Rat, the boastful Toad of Toad Hall, the society- hating Badger who lives in the frightening Wild Wood, and countless other mostly well-meaning creatures. Michael Hague's exquisitely detailed, breathtaking color illustrations on almost every generous spread--along with Kenneth Grahame's elegant, delightfully old-fashioned characterizations of the animals--make this book a wonderful read-aloud. Grahame's The Wind in the Willows has enchanted readers for four generations, and this lavishly illustrated gift edition is perhaps the finest around.

Cinderella (Everyman's Library Children's Classics) by C. S. Evans, Arthur Rackham (Illustrator)

Ingram: Living as a drudge in the home of her scheming stepmother and selfish stepsisters, Cinderella finds true love with a handsome prince, thanks to a dose of powerful magic.

The Compleat Angler: Or the Contemplative Man's Recreation by Izaak Walton, Arthur Rackham (Illustrator), Thomas McGuane (Introduction)

Midwest Book Review: First published in 1653, Izaak Walton's The Compleat Angler celebrates the art and spirit of fishing in prose and verse. Walton infused his work with anecdotes and commentaries on catching and preparing everything from carp to trout, chub to pike. This modern Ecco Press edition is enhanced with a new introduction by Thomas McGuane and illustrations by Arthur Rackham. The Compleat Angler is as fresh and relevant today as it was two and a half centuries ago. The Compleat Angler continues to be "must" reading for every new generation of fishermen (and fisher women!) who have ever picked up a pole, line and lure to set forth on one of human kind's oldest pastimes -- fishing.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, Arthur Rackham (Illustrator), Peter Glassman (Afterword)

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, Arthur Rackham (Illustrator), Peter Glassman (Afterword)

From Publishers Weekly: An edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll contains all of Arthur Rackham's original artwork from the 1907 edition (published after Sir John Tenniel's illustrations). Pen-and-inks dot the text; full-page paintings, such as one sepia-toned frame showing Alice, in a delicate rose-patterned dress, addressing the hookah-smoking Caterpillar, plus a sewn-in satin bookmark make this an elegant gift choice. Rip Van Winkle (Books of Wonder) by Washington Irving, Arthur Rackham (Illustrator), Peter Glassman (Afterword)

Rip Van Winkle (Books of Wonder) by Washington Irving, Arthur Rackham (Illustrator), Peter Glassman (Afterword)

From Booklist: A companion volume to Moses' edition of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1995), this book retells, in somewhat simplified language, Irving's classic tale of Rip Van Winkle, who fell asleep in the Catskills one evening and awoke 20 years later. Oil paintings appear on nearly every page of this large-format book, which includes a double-page spread portraying the hero's awakening. Like his great-grandmother Grandma Moses, the artist paints in a folk art style that may appeal to adults more than to children. Recommended for collections needing illustrated versions of the tale.
