On numerous occasions we have found that an e-mail prompt, such as the one above, was the only action that was required to receive payment. We assume that most of our late paying buyers
either forgot to send payment or (more likely) had lost their enthusiasm for the auction when it was time for them to take the burdensome steps of having to write a check, and address and mail an envelope. Some of
the more colorful explanations that our buyers have give us over the years for why payment was delayed, or we could not contact them have included: family emergencies, computer problems, and changed email addresses.
After repeated attempts to make contact, all eventually paid us for the eBay auctions that they had won. If you receive no response to the first or second e-mail reminder, consider calling the buyer on the
telephone. eBay buyer/seller telephone numbers can be obtained from the eBay site HERE. If these efforts are unsuccessful the seller can file a Non-Paying Bidder Alert through eBay. eBay sellers options for non-paying bidders can be found HERE. If you have been patient, sent a couple of friendly e-mails reminding the buyer of their obligation, contacted the buyer via telephone, and still have not received payment, your obligation to the eBay community is to leave negative feedback for the buyer. The buyers who never ultimately pay are referred to in the eBay community as "deadbeat buyers". When you finally do post negative feedback for deadbeat buyers, you run the risk of receiving negative counter feedback. However, in the few cases where we have left negative eBay feedback for non-payment, we have never received any counter feedback.
The 90 day feedback expiration
- eBay allows you 90 days from the conclusion of the auction to leave feedback for the buyer. In the case of negative feedback, this can be used to your advantage defensively. If you intend on leaving negative feedback for a buyer who did not pay and you're worried about a retaliatory negative feedback comment, mark your calendar (MS Outlook!) and wait until just before the feedback expiration. On the last day, post your negative feedback for that buyer. The buyer for whom you posted feedback may not notice the negative comment in time and may not be able to post negative feedback for you. Although this tactic does not help the eBay community in the interim, it may protect you, and the tactic is certainly within your rights within the framework of eBay's rules.
Another option for the seller is to request a Final Value Fee credit. The Final Value Fee credit must be filed within 60 day of the end of an
auction and only after a Non-Paying Buyer Alert has been filed (between 7 and 45 days after auction end). The Final Value Fee credit refunds the commission paid on an auction.
